Hudson Motor Car Company History
Roy D. Chapin and Howard E. Coffin, both former employees of the Olds Company, founded the Hudson Motor Car Company in 1909 with the financial assistance of retail magnate, Jospeh L. Hudson. Production in the new Hudson factory in Detroit, Michigan, totaled about 1000 cars in their first year with 4,508 Hudson cars built and sold in 1910.
In 1919 Hudson introduced the Essex and in 1929 the company entered the commercial truck market with its Dover brand. The Terraplane passenger car line was added to the Essex marque in 1934.
The fabulous Hudson Hornet debuted in 1951. The car was based on the Hudson Commodore model and featured a drop floor pan that gave the Hornet a low center of gravity. The 308-cid six-cylinder engine powered the Hudson Hornet to the front of the stock car circuit from 1952 to 1954.
In 1953, Hudson ventured into the compact car market with its Jet and Super Jet models. The Jets were well built but their slab-sided styling failed to draw many buyers.
Late in 1953, rumors began circulating of a merger between Hudson and Nash. With Hudson sales sinking, the Nash Merger was a lifesaver. On May 1, 1954, the Nash-Kelvinator Corporation and the Hudson Motor Car Company merged to form American Motors Corporation.
The Hudson brand was discontinued in June, 1957.
